Embarking on a new adventure, I joined the incredible team behind NASA’s Robonaut project in December 2012. I’m excited to develop and implement cutting-edge robots that would revolutionize space exploration.

At the heart of my endeavors is Robonaut 2, fondly known as R2, the first humanoid robot on the International Space Station. R2 was designed to augment astronauts by performing tasks that were deemed too dangerous or mundane. It journeyed to the International Space Station on STS-133.

R2 is preparing to receive a significant upgrade – a pair of legs designed to navigate the International Space Station, expanding its range of capabilities. This enhanced mobility will allow R2 to operate on the space station without needing a crew member to set it up or monitor it.

To accomplish this goal, R2 will also be equipped with a state-of-the-art operating system based on the Robot Operating System (ROS). This powerful software will enhance R2’s cognitive abilities, enabling it to interact with its surroundings in a more intelligent and adaptable manner.

As we prepare for these exciting advancements, the entire Robonaut team is buzzing with anticipation. I can’t wait to witness the immense potential that R2 will unlock, not only in the realm of space exploration but also in shaping the future of robotics here on Earth.
